Jay hollered from the living room as Millie took her boots off at the back door. “Kiki and Charlie are bringing the kids this weekend.”

Millie pulled out her cell phone. No message or missed call. Why would Kiki call Jay and not Millie? “I didn’t miss a call did I?”

“Uh, no. I called her.” He flipped the page of a hunting magazine. “I was just checking to see if Charlie might want to come scout out some prime spots for bow hunting when the season opens.”

He never called their kids. The kids would ask to chat with him and she’d take the phone to find him. He’d be elbow deep in a project and end up putting them on speakerphone to talk for a few minutes. But he never initiated the call. “She probably thought something had happened when she saw your number.”

He laughed. “Yeah, that was her first thought. She asked if everything was okay. I had to reassure her you were just at the neighbor’s and everything was fine.”

“And she believed you?”

“Well, not at first, but the good news is they’re coming. And Charlie is going to pick up this beauty.” He pointed to a large crossbow in the magazine.

“Lovely,” she said. “So you’ll get a license or whatever? And a tag? And what exactly are you planning on hunting?”

“I’ve got it all under control.” He held up his phone “Turns out this little thing is very useful.”

“Imagine that,” she said. “There was a time you said if you didn’t have to have one for work, you wouldn’t.”

“That was before I spent all day in this damn chair. I’m giving it until this weekend and then I don’t care how much it hurts, I’m out of here.”

“I’m sure Kiki has a boot somewhere. I’ll call her and check.”

“I need to go clear a spot for them to park. Maybe order some more gravel, but I don’t want to do too much if we’re not going to be here in the fall.”

“Jay! Don’t talk like that. This is our land. Our home. We’re going to win this case and make this property our forever home.”

“I don’t know. If the town doesn’t want us here maybe it’s a lost cause. I figured we should get as much use out of the place as we can in the last few weeks we’ll be here. I try to picture it, but I don’t see it happening. Can’t even get a lawyer.”

“I have a lead on that. Give me a couple of days.”

“If Kevin couldn’t find someone to take it on, I doubt you’ll have much success.”

Millie cocked her hip. “Thanks for the support. I don’t know why you’re giving up. You’re the one who brought us here and now you just want to pack up and go somewhere else?”

“And I don’t know why you’re so attached. It’s not like it’s the paradise we expected.”

“It’s not,” she conceded. “But in some ways, it’s better than I imagined. If you’d use the crutches and walk with me on the trails, you’d see.
